How to find us

Below are detailed driving directions on how to reach La Bandita.

It might look daunting, but it is actually much easier than it looks, as we’re only 20 mins off the A1 Highway, and all the turns are clearly marked (ok well, sort of). The last 4KM are on a bumpy, steep dirt road, and if you are in a low clearance car you should take it nice and slow. But fear not!
If you have a GPS device, do not program it for Pienza or the postal code first, because we are 15 mins outside of Pienza and it will lead you out of your way to go to Pienza first. You can program it for Chianciano Terme or La Foce but follow the directions before you arrive into the town. If you are coming from Siena, put in Bagno Vignoni, but follow the directions below.

From Rome

Short version (for those who know the area already): take the A1 Autostrade (Highway) to the Chiusi-Chianciano exit. Before entering Chianciano, following signs for the SS2, passing through La Foce. 2 KM after La Foce, turn right on the dirt road, at the top of the hill take the third left and following until the sign for the hotel.

Full Directions – FROM FIUMICINO: leave the airport following signs for the A1 AUTOSTRADA. After 13KM out of the airport you’ll follow the A1 FIRENZE exit and enter the G.R.A. ring road that surrounds Rome, just keep following signs for A1 FIRENZE. After 38KM, exit for the A1 FIRENZE.

After another 21 KM you reach a toll both at the entrance to the A1 FIRENZE. After taking the ticket stay on this highway until the exit for CHIUSI-CHIANCIANO TERME (about 124KM). After paying the toll (the VIACARD lane takes all credit cards), follow signs for CHIANCIANO (a quick right then immediately left).

After 7.5km, just past an Esso gas station, turn left following signs for the SS2 CASSIA (Cassia is the name of the old Roman road that is also marked as SS2), and then immediately turn right up the hill (here also marked for GROSSETO and several other towns. Do NOT go straight towards Sarteano). This road goes up around the back of Chianciano. At the T-junction turn left, marked for SS2 CASSIA. Then very soon at another T-junction, again turn left following SS2 CASSIA sign.

In 4 km you’ll reach the villa of LA FOCE (behind trees off to the left), keeping straight at the crossroads as the road starts down the hill. After just under 2km there is a dirt road on your right with several large garbage bins here. Turn right here (There used to be green La Bandita signs here, but the Province has taken them down for the moment, grrr) But follow this famous, winding, rocky road lined on either side with cypress trees. Half way up you pass Agriturismo Casanova on your left. Keep going and as you crest the top of the hill, ignore the two smaller turns to the left as the main dirt road winds around right.

At the third dirt road to the left, you’ll see our green sign directing you left (do not go straight up to Agriturismo Lucciola Bella if you arrive at that house you have missed the turn). Stay on this road 1.5km as it winds down and then up again, until it crests at a little pond (surrounded by reeds) to your left. On your right you’ll see our green sign for the turn to La Bandita.

From Rome city center or Ciampino Airport:
Depending on where you are, find your way to A1 Autostrade, in the direction of FIRENZE, and follow the directions above.

FROM FLORENCE/THE NORTH

Take the A1 Autostrada in the direction of ROMA to the CHIUSI-CHIANCIANO exit. Then follow the same directions as above from Rome.

FROM PISA AIRPORT:

Follow the green AUTOSTRADE signs as you leave the airport. Keep following the A12 signs, and in 4KM, you’ll reach a toll booth. After 10KM, follow signs for A11 Autostrada in the direction of FIRENZE. In 75KM, just before reaching Florence, you reach the junction with the A1. Follow the A1 signs in the direction ROMA until the CHIUSI-CHIANCIANO exit and then continue with the directions above.

FROM SIENA

Take the SS2 CASSIA south out of SIENA. This road winds through some small towns, (and has a short 5km dual lane bypass that skirts Monteroni-Just keep following the ROMA signs). Follow the SS2 all the way until 5km past the town of SAN QUIRICO. Here you turn left (signed for PIENZA) onto the SP53 (if you reach the turn to BAGNO VIGNONI you have just missed it).

Follow this road straight through a 4 way intersection (Follow signs straight for for CHIANCIANO). About 2.5 Km after the intersection you will see the wood sign for LA BANDITA pointing up a dirt road to the left. This is the BUMPY back road, so if you prefer, continue straight only 2.5km until you see an overpass crossing above you.

Take the ramp on the left to get up onto this road (Signed again for the A1 AUTOSTRADA and CHIANCIANO). Here the road begins to wind up the hill, and a few KM you will see the famous winding cypress-tree lined road off to your left. Look for a dirt road turn off to the left with several big green garbage bins. (There used to be signs here for La Bandita, but they have been taken down by the Province, hopefully only temporarily. If you reach Ristorante Oasi on your left, you have gone 1.5KM too far.

Half way up this bumpy steep dirt road, you pass Agriturismo Casanova on your left.

FROM CHIUSI TRAIN STATION

There are two parts to the town of CHIUSI. The station is in CHIUSI SCALO, so as you leave the station, follow signs for CHIANCIANO, but don’t be confused by signs for CHIUSI, which refer to the old town on top of the hill, whose walls you’ll pass. This road winds its way to the entrance to the A1 AUTOSTRADE. Here, do not enter the autostrada, but stay to the right, following the signs for CHIANCIANO.

After just under 2km there is a dirt road on your right with several large garbage bins here.

Turn right here (There used to be green La Bandita signs here, but the Province has taken them down for the moment, grrr) But follow this famous, winding, rocky road lined on either side with cypress trees.
